Interview with Diabeloop
When are you launching in France ? And are you planning to launch it in other countries ? UK ?
Gradual launch is expected to start in 2019 in Europe. We have had quite a bit of interest coming from different European countries. Beyond France, which is our “home country”, primary countries will be where there is appetite for innovative medical devices and fluid reimbursement mechanisms.
When Dexcom is used is it still possible to receive Dexcom information on a separate device ? ( eg Dexcom phone app or Dexcom receiver )
The handset will perform as the all-in-one user interface allowing data display and system control.
It won’t be possible to use another receiving device with the initial product. However we’re definitely looking into mobile app data display, especially for the kid version.
Is there a app for the phone ? Will there be? Will phone ever replace controller ?
cF previous answer :) We’re working on it and also on integrating other connected devices like smart watches.
As for controlling from a personal phone, it’s a more complex issue regarding all the risks involved (hacking, battery shortage, theft). As a highly regulated industry, we need to find ways to overcome this while maintaining the highest level of security for patients.
I understand that parts of the system are inspired by DIY systems such as Openaps. Is that true ?
We looked at, and discussed quite a bit with the DIY community. There was a lot to learn from it, in particular on what users were looking for in a closed loop; we compared our algorithm with the DIY systems; we also contributed significant amount of code to Tidepool for example.
I understand that system uses AI to make adjustments over time. Do you mind sharing what ratios system can change ?
Our system is developed using machine learning methods for a given population; when the system starts it will then learn from the person's physiology and/or lifestyle and will adapt over time to the individual requirements - like meal ratios of compensation factor. However this adaptive machine learning system will follow first and foremost the preferences of the user (glycemic target, hyperglycemia threshold, etc...)
Is the big strategy to expand the system beyond current components and have more insulin pump to choose from and more cgm?
Yes, our wish is to integrate more devices in the future so patients could choose the option that fits their lifestyle and needs.
