Nothing Bad Will Happen is a VGM-synth-bop. It's an earnest, optimistic yet yearning bop about doing the things you truly want to do while maybe still being afraid. Eventually the fear dissipates. Inspired by true events! It's an earnest mantra to calm oneself down, and also to hype oneself up. It also acknowledges fear in the background with an underlying melancholic melody, and dissonant harmonies.
The video symbolizes how worth it it can be to embrace your fears and get out of your comfort zone when it means you'll experience something truly special on the other side. That's what the fireworks scenes represent. The hike is difficult but the view is worth it. Same with the Josiah flying shots, of course!
The story opens with taking off/nerves, progresses with enjoying the ride, having fun (showing the theme park rides/arcade), and safely landing. In the short closeup shots of me riding on the plane, I'm nervous at the beginning, but eventually loosen up and sing "nothin" while in the air.
Songwriting-wise, there are symbols of loosening up because throughout the song, Josiah's voice is leading the chorus melody, but at the last chorus, we switch and I take the lead, kicking it off with the phrase "I said" for the first time. This symbolizes helping others to get in a better state of mind, so they can help others too.
The song came about while we were on an airplane. The lyrics are raw feelings and direct quotes from those moments, and were not overthought much more from the first draft. It is a big part of our dynamic, we do "positive peer pressure" and push each other and ourselves to do things we used to be too afraid to do and it's always worth it. Later we look back and think, what were we so afraid of?
The song not only focuses on the positive, but acknowledging feelings of fear and uncertainty. The melody itself is a minor/sad/yearning one if you notice- but the emotional tone is an internal wish for everything to work out, and hopefulness. Especially within situations you can't control. The majora's mask lurking in the background of the board visually symbolizes this.
ALSO the audio album cover (not the youtube thumbnail) is meant to be so that depending on your perspective, I could be either opening or shutting the window. You have the choice!
I wrote the echoing harmonies in the chorus "fly, fly" "ride, ride" to be dissonant/slightly unnerving because it represents the feelings of fear as you continue on. The synths have a melancholic sound - in a good way! They sound like hopeful teardrops.
The videos are from recent travels/shows! One is in a rehearsal room right before our VGM CON performance, and an actual show performance at Velour! It's cool to see the chill and hype versions of the song/performance - aka the chill rehearsal room vid, and the hype show-mode performance. I love editing!
A more cynical listener could hear this in a satirical way, which is a fun interpretation but less nuanced. It's a happy, hopeful, yearning, sad, chill, hype song!
When I sing "When the engine makes that sound…no!!" It is meant to show how I feel when I hear the plane making weird noises lol.
When I describe the song meanings in these descriptions, it's the one time I really sit and analyze and write what they're about. The most organized way to describe any feeling for us is through the songs themselves. Music and visual art is so helpful with processing emotions and getting into states of mind.
