(look up minority voices especially, perhaps even compare several pieces about the same event)
Movies, TV, Plays and Musicals about that era (ie. The Crucible, Fences, Selma, Hamilton, 1776, Mercy Street, John Adams, Lincoln)
Historical societies, presidential libraries, national monuments, museums. Call ahead, you might get to see more than you bargained for!
Of course fiction and nonfiction about that time frame.
Some of my favorite expansive nonfictions are several books by Gail Collins for women's history and Ronald Takiki for A Different Mirror: multicultural history of America.
Try to find minority authors for example Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Sandra Cisneros, Joseph Bruchac, Louise Erdrich.
Don't discount graphic history books. March (trilogy about Civil Rights) by John Lewis and Indeh (Apache Wars) by Ethan Hawke are really beautifully done!
