Despite the name, northern fur seals are actually eared seals, which means they’re more closely related to sea lions than “true” seals.

Confusing? Very. But their traits give it away: external ear flaps, long front flippers, and hind flippers that rotate to help them move on land.

They were named before scientists fully understood how different they were, so the name stuck. And the “fur” part comes from their incredibly dense coat, which helps keep them insulated in cold northern waters.

Basically, the name says seal. The body says sea lion.
