The North Carolina Tar Heels vs Illinois Fighting Illini women's basketball teams in NCAA March Madness 2001. Their male basketball counterparts met in the 2005 National Championship Game at The Dome at America's Center in St. Louis as part of the NCAA Final Four where the Tar Heels won it all which is the only Final Four in men's college basketball at the venue. The other two Final Fours to take place in St. Louis as part of Division I men's basketball were 1973 and 1978, both of which took place at St. Louis Arena.
