Did you know, hidden under the North Sea lies a beautiful chalk reef full of marine life?
North Norfolk, on the east coast of England, faces straight into the North Sea. It's an area of East Anglia known for rugged, soft cliffs that hide geological and archaeological treasures, desolate saltmarshes and sandy beaches, but…lying in the water, just metres from the shoreline there is a secret world - the Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds Marine Conservation Zone.
As you can see in this short film, created by our Southern North Seas marine team in partnership with Chris Taylor Photography this is an underwater environment filled with a thriving and dynamic community of algae, invertebrates and fish! Beautiful creatures such as the velvet shore crab, compass jellyfish and short-spined sea scorpion fish can be seen on the reef in this video.
Work is ongoing in partnership to improve understanding but each marine chalk habitat is important for different reasons so it is vital that this beautiful habitat is valued and maintained for future generations.
Another way to get up close and personal with the local sea life is at the rockpool aquarium at Sheringham Museum. With a regularly changing selection of marine plants and sea creatures you never know what you’ll find!
