Nope is an American sci-fi horror that was written and directed by the multi-talented Jordan Peele. He’s also the writer and director of the popular films Get Out and Us. The success of these previous works certainly increased my interest in what Peele had in store for us next. The film stars Daniel Kaluuya, Steven Yeun, and Keke Palmer. Most known for their respective roles in Get Out, The Walking Dead, and Akeelah and the Bee.

The setting is modern day Hollywood West, but we do have some flashback moments to help set the stage. Kaluuya plays OJ, short for Otis Jr, who’s struggling to keep his family owned generational horse handling business from failing. Palmer plays the sister Em, short for Emerald, who’s much more outgoing and carefree than her brother OJ. Yeun plays the role of the nearby Western theme park owner Ricky “Jupe” Park, who ends up buying horses from Otis Jr to keep them afloat. While all of this may seem mundane, it makes OJ and Em relatable while also satisfying the needs of all the characters in play. I feel obligated to mention this, because all too often I’m left feeling annoyed when characters make decisions that seem to have no reasoning behind them. This is not the case here, and I think that’s exceedingly rare, especially in a sci-fi film.

The trailer leaves no doubt that something sinister is in the sky above. But what it doesn’t do is spoil what that something is, and neither will I. The pacing of the film is on point, and you’ll get most of the answers to the questions you’ll have. I can’t say that it’s perfect, but hardly anything is. I found myself enjoying this one and honestly based on the director’s track record, I’m not surprised. Looking forward to more from Jordan Peele in the future.
