I don't read too much modern(ish) history but Edmund Morris' Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and Theodore Rex were amazing! Still need to get to the third book in the trilogy, Colonel Roosevelt. The first won a Pulitzer in 1980 but I think Theodore Rex just has a great title.
