IMPORTANT: As shown in the pinned comment you can get around the need to boolean an additional object by selecting "Only Rim" in the solidify modifier. Not sure why that didnt occur to me but thanks to @liquid201 for pointing it out!
In this video I wanted to show off an improve upon a technique to create panel lines really easily on a plane, making it work on 3d shaped and a bit more efficiently solving issues as we go.
