On April 4, Texans gathered at the Capitol to protest plans for a border wall through Big Bend National Park, a demonstration organized by Save Big Bend that gained traction online. In February, the Trump administration waived dozens of environmental laws to allow construction of a 150-mile barrier in West Texas, including Big Bend.

Bipartisan opposition quickly emerged. At the rally, congressional candidates Katy Padilla Stout, a Democrat, and Brandon Herrera, a Republican, both spoke against the wall. Protesters chanted “No Wall,” while Indigenous-led group People of La Junta for Preservation led dances and chants.

The Trump administration appears to have backed off plans for a physical border wall in Big Bend National Park. As of April 2, a CBP map no longer shows wall construction there, and a Border Patrol spokesperson said there are currently no such plans. Instead, the agency may use “virtual wall” technology to monitor crossings, though plans remain unclear.

The map legend has shifted repeatedly in recent weeks making future plans uncertain. While officials have discussed a “virtual wall,” a physical barrier is still planned in Presidio County.
