For many Kiwis, it might be tempting to get petrol now and pay for it later... but is it wise to treat regular essentials like one-off purchases? How would someone get on top of recurring expenses they could barely afford in the first place?
Predatory lending has for some time concerned analysts who worry that low-income earners are most susceptible to the allure of no-interest payment plans while being most likely to end up trapped by crippling late payment fees.
Thomas Scrimgeour of thinktank, the Maxim Institute, is heartened by recent changes to regulations governing Buy-Now-Pay-Later transactions, with more protection for consumers; but there's also concern the improvements don't go far enough. (www.maxim.org.nz)
