The British telephone box is an object caught between existence and obsolescence. This icon of British culture seems pointless nowadays, but yet they exist quietly in the background to this day, in large numbers.
If you walk round a city, town, or village you’ll still see telephone boxes. But these are the last ones, a dying breed, and they’re disappearing fast.
Do phone boxes have any useful function nowadays?
According to BT, 98% of the UK population owns a mobile phone and calls made through its public phones have fallen by about 90% in the past decade.
Ofcom claimed that around 5 million calls were still being made from phone boxes each year just two or three years ago.
At their peak, in the mid-1990s, the British population of phone boxes was about 100,000. By 2004 there were just 75,000.
As of the end of March 2025, the number of remaining, usable phone boxes in the UK is 13,226.
Between January 2023 and July 2025 BT reviewed 3015 phone boxes to determine their fate. They decided to retain 193 of those boxes meaning the other 2822 will be removed.
I’ve no doubt that the 2026 phone box stats from BT will be dire. You can expect another couple of thousand boxes to be removed that’s for sure.
Does anyone really care? Like many pieces of iconic history, is it only the enthusiast that’s sad to see them disappear?
If they bring BT little revenue, cost a lot of money to fix and everybody has a mobile phone, then the fate of the British phone box is sealed.
