Do you need to do a vocal warm up? One self proclaimed expert says "no", yet hundreds of years of singing instruction and millions of singers say something different.
This is my opinion on the statement based on hundreds of years of voice pedagogy, my own experience, the experience of other professional singers I've known and just basic observation.
This kind of statement could only come from someone who doesn't do a lot of professional singing for any duration. Too many people calling themselves vocal teachers and coaches don't spend enough time just singing or performing. This disconnect from the realities of performance can lead to these kinds of logical fallacies.
Sports medical doctors would never agree that an athlete should participate in a rigorous physical activity without warming and stretching the body first;t this helps avoid cramping, injury and fatigue. Singing is a physical activity and the same rules would apply to them as to any other athlete.
I would love to see the reaction of someone going back stage at La Scala Opera House and telling the tenors and sopranos not to waste their notes by warming up prior to the performance. This notion is just silly.
