Some people seem to reject the gift-character of life by seeing life as as nothing but an imposition while others reject it by seeing life as nothing but a dress rehearsal for an "afterlife." Only through recognition of death, and ultimately death acceptance, can we see how life, as gift, relates to our being? "The gift," that is, refers to the fact that death, as known, makes one's very life seem to be a kind of object that stands in relation to one's existence, as if there could be "life" as an object related to "one's being." We can seem to be in addition to our lives. Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Experience" imparts some needed wisdom here:
"Without any shadow of doubt amidst this vertigo of shows and politics,
I settle myself ever firmer in the creed,
that we should not postpone and refer and wish,
but do broad justice where we are,
by whomsoever we deal with,
accepting our actual companions and circumstances,
however humble or odious,
as the mystic officials to whom the universe has delegated its whole pleasure for us."
