“Most days I go to bed hungry and I feel I'm not even surviving how I should be. Little things that people brush off are big things to me.” Errol writes in his letter as he is starving from depression.
This video tells the story of an elderly man who passes away from starvation which was the result of severe depression. He used to get benefits from the UK's Department for Work and Pensions. However, when he got mentally ill, he was unable to attend a fitness for work assessment. After failing to attend multiple times, they revoked his benefits driving him deeper into his depression. Unable to buy food and afraid to leave his home, Errol slowly starved and used his last breath to write the WFP a letter which he was barely able to finish. Ultimately, the DWP's benefit officers carried out a "safeguarding visit" but it was already too late.
We chose this story because we believe mental health issues is fast growing problem in society. Mental health problems are often misunderstood and heavily stigmatized which makes the people suffering from it less prone to go out and seek help. Furthermore, many institutions and government systems are not adequately set up to deal with and help people with mental health problems. Hopefully this video will help raise awareness on the seriousness of the situation and that it is important for our society to change our systems to be there for those in need.
