The X-59 QueSST aims to reduce the sonic boom to a sonic thump, a much quieter and softer sound that is barely noticeable on the ground. It does so by using a unique shape and features that minimize its sonic signature, such as a long and slender fuselage, a delta wing with winglets, a T-tail, and an inverted V-tail. It is powered by a single General Electric F414 engine with an afterburner that enables it to reach speeds of up to Mach 1.42 at an altitude of 55,000 feet. It can carry a single pilot in a cockpit equipped with an external vision system, which provides a synthetic view of the outside world through cameras and screens.
The X-59 QueSST is currently undergoing ground testing at Lockheed Martin Skunk Works in Palmdale, California, where it arrived in December 2022. The team is conducting vibration testing, engine runs, and taxi tests to ensure the aircraft is safe to fly. The first flight of the X-59 QueSST is expected to take place in 2023, six months later than previously planned. The flight will mark a historic milestone for supersonic aviation, as it will be the first time a civilian aircraft breaks the sound barrier since the retirement of Concorde in 2003. The X-59 QueSST will also pave the way for the development of the Boom Overture, a supersonic transport airliner that could fly up to 75 passengers across oceans at twice the speed of sound, reducing travel times and connecting more people around the world.
