Yes, tariffs were unpopular in the South. No, they were not a significant contributing factor to secession. No, the increased costs on dutiable products passed onto consumers did not disproportionally impact the South in any meaningful material way. An overwhelming majority of tariff revenue on both consumer and capital goods (and therefore the federal government's main source of income) was paid by people in the North.
