One NAS isn’t a backup. In this video I put a Synology at my parents’ house to create a real off-site backup—no cloud fees, no subscriptions. If you care about your photos, videos, and files, this Synology backup walkthrough shows exactly how to protect data from fire, theft, flood, and ransomware using Synology to Synology backup.
We start on the remote Synology by installing Hyper Backup Vault, then on the primary Synology I build a Hyper Backup task that targets that vault. You’ll see every Synology backup setting I use—encryption, versioning, retention policies, integrity checks, and notifications—so your backup isn’t just running, it’s trustworthy.
Networking is simple and secure: I stage the device at home on DHCP, move it off-site, and switch the Synology to a static IP. I cover safe connectivity options (VPN with Tailscale/WireGuard/OpenVPN) so your Synology backup doesn’t require risky port-forwarding. I also touch on DDNS—when a hostname helps, and when to avoid exposing your Synology.
Performance matters for any Synology backup. I show how to plan upload bandwidth, schedule backup windows, set bandwidth limits, and keep family internet happy. We’ll check Synology resource usage, verify backup integrity, and tune notifications so you know the backup completed without babysitting.
Reliability is everything. I demo a quick test restore—because a Synology backup you can’t restore is just an expensive copy. You’ll also see drive health (SMART), UPS basics, and alerts inside DSM 7/7.2 so your Synology off-site backup stays healthy long-term.
I also explain when Hyper Backup is the right tool for archive-style backup and when Snapshot Replication may make sense for fast failover between Synology boxes. Either way, you’ll leave with a repeatable Synology backup blueprint for home lab and small office.
Important note: this off-site Synology backup gives you a second copy. For true resilience, add a third copy (cloud or offline) so your backup strategy isn’t a single point of failure. Even then, this Synology off-site setup is a huge step up from keeping everything on one box.
If this helped, tap like, subscribe, and drop your Synology backup questions in the comments. Chapters and settings are in the video so you can pause, copy, and complete your own Synology off-site backup today—without monthly fees.
