National Library of Medicine | NLM R25 Training Program: Supporting a New Generation of Data Scientists @NLMNIH | Uploaded June 2023 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
As one of the 27 institutes at NIH, the National Library of Medicine supports innovative research and development in biomedical informatics and data science. Through the new R25 program, NLM is developing a new generation of scientists capable of leading biomedical informatics and data science research into the future.
The goal of the NLM’s R25 program is to encourage talented undergraduate and master's students, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue further training and careers in these important fields.
This summer, twelve universities are participating in the inaugural cycle of the program.
Through foundational skills-building and mentorship, the NLM R25 program is strengthening a diverse NIH-supported workforce that will foster scientific innovation, enhance global competitiveness and improve the quality of research.
The National Science Foundation reported that of the U.S citizens and permanent residents who were awarded bachelor’s degrees in science or engineering, only 21% were from underrepresented minority groups and for those awarded doctoral degrees the number drops to 14%.
