As far back as 1972, Nissan Corporation and Datsun based in California was Virtue Signalling and advertising more than their cars. Whether it was saving a tree or providing people training, they were in the Virtue Signalling Business. At least then, they weren't Lecturing us, just telling us how great they were rather then ordering us to be great ourselves.
