It’s not Hindu, not Indian — it’s human.
Over a thousand years ago, a young sage named Adi Shankaracharya walked across India barefoot.
When someone asked him, “Who are you?”
He closed his eyes… and what flowed from his lips became one of the greatest spiritual declarations ever written —
the Nirvana Shatkam, also known as Atma Shatkam — The Six Verses of Liberation.
These six verses describe the real ‘you’ —
not your name, not your body, not your mind —
but your eternal essence, your purest form of consciousness.

🕉️ Verse 1
मनोबुद्ध्यहंकार चित्तानि नाहं
न च श्रोत्रजिह्वे न च घ्राणनेत्रे।
न च व्योमभूमिर्न तेजो न वायुः
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहम् शिवोऽहम्॥
Mano-buddhy-ahankāra-chittāni nāham,
Na cha shrotra-jihve na cha ghrāṇa-netre,
Na cha vyoma-bhūmir na tejo na vāyuh,
Chidānanda-rūpah Shivoham Shivoham.
I am not the mind, nor the intellect,
Not the ego, not the memory.
I am not the ears, not the tongue, not the nose, not the eyes.
I am not space, not earth, not fire, not air.
I am the form of pure consciousness and bliss.
I am Shiva. I am That.
🕉️ Verse 2
न च प्राणसंज्ञो न वै पञ्चवायुः
न वा सप्तधातुर् न वा पञ्चकोशः।
न वाक्पाणिपादं न चोपस्थपायु
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहम् शिवोऽहम्॥
Na cha prāṇa-samjño na vai pancha-vāyuh,
Na vā sapta-dhātur na vā pancha-koshah,
Na vāk-pāṇi-pādam na chopastha-pāyu,
Chidānanda-rūpah Shivoham Shivoham.
I am not the breath or the life-force,
Not the five kinds of vital airs.
Not the seven bodily elements or the five layers of existence.
I am not speech, nor hands, nor feet,
Nor the organs of action or creation.
I am the form of pure consciousness and bliss.
I am Shiva. I am That.
🕉️ Verse 3
न मे द्वेषरागौ न मे लोभमोहौ
मदो नैव मे नैव मात्सर्यभावः।
न धर्मो न चार्थो न कामो न मोक्षः
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहम् शिवोऽहम्॥
Na me dvesha-rāgau na me lobha-mohau,
Mado naiva me naiva mātsarya-bhāvah,
Na dharmo na chārtho na kāmo na mokshah,
Chidānanda-rūpah Shivoham Shivoham.
I have no likes or dislikes,
No greed, no delusion,
No pride, no envy.
I am not bound by duty, wealth, desire, or even liberation.
I am pure consciousness and bliss.
I am Shiva. I am That.

न पुण्यं न पापं न सौख्यं न दुःखम्
न मन्त्रो न तीर्थं न वेदा न यज्ञः।
अहं भोजनं नैव भोज्यं न भोक्ता
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहम् शिवोऽहम्॥
Na punyam na pāpam na saukhyam na duhkham,
Na mantro na tīrtham na vedā na yajñah,
Aham bhojanam naiva bhojyam na bhoktā,
Chidānanda-rūpah Shivoham Shivoham.
I am not virtue or sin,
Not pleasure or pain.
I am not any mantra, not any holy place,
Not scriptures or rituals.
I am not the food, the one who eats, or the act of eating.
I am pure consciousness and bliss.
I am Shiva. I am That.

न मृत्युर्न शंका न मे जातिभेदः
पिता नैव मे नैव माता न जन्मः।
न बन्धुर्न मित्रं गुरुर्नैव शिष्यः
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहम् शिवोऽहम्॥
Na mrityur na shankā na me jāti-bhedah,
Pitā naiva me naiva mātā na janmah,
Na bandhur na mitram gurur naiva shishyah,
Chidānanda-rūpah Shivoham Shivoham.
I have no death, no fear.
I have no caste or creed.
No father, no mother, no birth.
No relative, no friend,
No teacher, no student.
I am pure consciousness and bliss.
I am Shiva. I am That.

अहं निर्विकल्पो निराकाररूपो
विभुत्वाच्च सर्वत्र सर्वेन्द्रियाणाम्।
न चासंगतं नैव मुक्तिर्न बन्धः
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहम् शिवोऽहम्॥
Aham nirvikalpo nirākāra-rūpah,
Vibhutvācha sarvatra sarvendriyānām,
Na chāsangatam naiva muktir na bandhah,
Chidānanda-rūpah Shivoham Shivoham.
I am beyond all thoughts and concepts.
I have no form.
I exist everywhere, in all beings.
I am beyond attachment, beyond bondage, beyond liberation.
I am pure consciousness and bliss.
I am Shiva. I am That.
This is the final awakening.
When all illusions drop — even the illusion of seeking freedom —
what remains is infinite stillness.
You realize…
you were never inside the body.
The body was inside you.
You are the sky — and every cloud of thought is just passing through.
