this has been my pet project since January. I'd never learned an entire concerto before, so the prospect of learning, polishing, and then _recording_ one as a hobbyist was pretty intimidating, to put it lightly. I'm not exactly classically trained -- as you can probably tell from my technique -- but I managed to make it work... somehow.
on the whole, I think this piece plays to my strengths pretty well, which is part of why I chose it. it's a short concerto, but a delightfully fun and cheesy one, chock-full of fast leaps and runs that sound much harder than they are. (the third movement is very hard, though) I will say: I won't be listening to any more kapustin for a long while after this, ESPECIALLY this piece haha. I've had my fill.
the learning process itself was actually quite fun and rewarding -- recording, not so much. this piece sits right at the edge of my technical abilities, and there are sections in the third movement that I still haven't quite figured out how to play reliably, especially at Dupree's breakneck tempo 😨

full disclosure: while this is edited to look like one continuous take, it is a *spliced* recording. I am not nearly good enough to do this in one take, so this is more of a Frankensteined composite of what I can play, when literally everything goes right -and i've had hours to practice between takes- . nevertheless, some of the cuts were necessary to connect free tempo parts
midi editing is also kept to the minimum. my digital randomly spits out short notes and inconsistent velocities sometimes, so those have been taken care of. as tempting as it was to record "good enough" takes with mistakes and fix them in post, I took it upon myself to record as many basically-note-perfect takes as possible, relying on heavy splicing to stitch them together
this took 4 days to record and 2 days to edit; by the end, I'd produced 50 gigabytes of crusty webcam footage totaling over 7 hours, completely ruined my sleep schedule, and hurt my fingers from practicing so much between sessions. it was worth it, I think.
oh, apart from the ending, I added one missed note in post: an LH F# around 13:41. I liked that take enough to not want to record any more, and the incomplete harmony bothered me. apart from that, I think there were a handful of notes that were shifted a few ms, nothing too major
