Nihon Kamoshika are a goat-antelope which are endemic to central and northern Honshu, with smaller pockets of populations on Kyushu and Shikoku.
They were once almost hunted to extinction but were given special protect by the government and are now listed as least concerned by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
They are still a protected species but in fewer areas, 13 areas spread over 23 prefectures. In non-conservation areas they are sometimes culled for population control.
