One year after the devastating oil spill on remote, Nightingale Island, I returned to this UNESCO-protected habitat to see how things had improved. I was pleased to see that thanks to the mighty ocean and nature's resilience, much of the oil is gone and many of the animals have returned. It is still too early to tell what the long-term effects will be on the penguin, seal and fish populations, but there is hope that with continued conservation efforts, the island can be returned to its former pristine self.
Nightingale Island sits in the South Atlantic at 37° 25′ 10″ S, 12° 28′ 40″ W, part of the Tristan Da Cunha island group, the remotest archipelago in the world.
