On the evening of 12 December 1941, the Italian light cruisers Alberico da Barbiano and Alberto di Giussano left Palermo carrying urgently needed aviation fuel, stores, and personnel for Tripoli, screened only by the torpedo boat Cigno. To the west, five Allied destroyers, four British ships of the 4th Destroyer Flotilla and the Dutch Isaac Sweers, were already moving east and were redirected toward Cape Bon after reconnaissance fixed the Italian dash.
