Square Enix just announced that Nier Automata is going to be continued. This is very exciting news and can mean a multitude of different things. There's a lot of speculation around it, but it's very clear there's a specific direction they're heading, specifically because the game has been selling so many copies over the course of the past decade. They've recently made 10 million copies sold, and with this achievement, the goal now is to create more Nier, specifically Nier Automata. This is not a scenario where it's a standalone game with no real relation between the two, such as Nier Replicant and Nier Automata. And what I mean by that is the idea of having to play the previous one before playing the new one. However, in this situation, it seems like it's the other way around. You have to play Nier Automata to understand the next story.
