MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology | NGBS2022 Talk 8: AlphaFold and its implications for understanding biology- John Jumper @LMBCambridge | Uploaded October 2022 | Updated October 2024, 2 hours ago.
AlphaFold and its implications for understanding biology
Speaker: John Jumper, DeepMind, London, UK
Chair: Chris Johnson, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, UK
Co-Chair: Maria Flocco, AstraZeneca, UK
John Jumper describes how AlphaFold predicts highly accurate protein structures from amino acid protein sequence. He highlights the role of the critical assessment in structure prediction (CASP) in stimulating development. He gives an overview of how AlphaFold predicts structures through a process of deep-learning using a neural network. He looks forward to the major challenges in further developments of prediction especially interactomes, conformation states, and the effect of mutation.

About the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB):
The LMB is one of the world's leading research institutes. Discoveries and inventions developed at the LMB, for example DNA sequencing and methods to determine the structure of proteins, have revolutionised all areas of biology. Its scientists work to advance understanding of biological processes at the molecular level. This information will help us to understand the workings of complex systems, such as the immune system and the brain, and solve key problems in human health.
