Sega sold this one with a straight up mad scientist bit, wiring a player into a foil helmet full of tubes like they were plugging his brain directly into pro football. Classic early 90s Sega attitude. The game behind the ad was a genuinely big step up though.
NFL Football '94 Starring Joe Montana came out in late 1993, and its headline feature is something people take for granted now. It was the first game in Sega's Joe Montana series to carry both the NFL and the NFLPA licenses at the same time. That meant all 28 real NFL teams of the era plus real player names and stats for the 1993 season. Before this you usually got one or the other, real teams with made up players, or real players with no team names, so having both together was a real deal.
It also talked to you. The series was famous for running play by play commentary while you played, which was impressive tech to squeeze onto a cartridge back then. For this one they added a proper season mode with a battery save instead of passwords, so you could carry a team through a full sixteen game season toward the Super Bowl, and it even tracked your league leaders in a little newspaper style layout. A lot of people consider this the best of Sega's Joe Montana football games, the one that finally went toe to toe with John Madden.
One detail worth catching on the box. Montana is in red, not 49ers colors, because by 1993 the man who led the Team of the Eighties and won four Super Bowls in San Francisco had just moved to the Kansas City Chiefs. So this cover caught him right at the start of his Chiefs chapter.
