Abstract: Hot stamping, also known as hot press forming or press hardening, is a vital manufacturing technology for producing automotive components from sheet steel. This seminar presents recent developments aimed at overcoming long-standing drawbacks in conventional hot stamping, focusing on both the steel substrate and its coating. Specifically, these innovations adapt high-strength steel microstructural concepts developed for cold-forming automotive applications.
Dr Radhakanta Rana is a distinguished metallurgist and researcher with over 18 years of experience in research and development. Holding a joint PhD from IIT-Kharagpur and RWTH Aachen University, his expertise spans alloy design, processing, microstructure-property relationships, and sustainable metallurgy. Dr Rana excels at translating scientific discoveries into commercial steel technologies. He currently leads major projects, mentors scientific talent, has published over 115 papers, and holds more than 70 granted patents. His contributions have earned prestigious industry accolades, including the IOM3 Gold Medal, the TMS Brimacombe Medal, and multiple Tata InnoVista Awards alongside recent coverage in Dutch and international media. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Materials Science and Technology and various other editorial board positions.
