“Mad Apple,” Cirque du Soleil’s Manhattan-flavored variety show at New York-New York, is shutting down Labor Day weekend.
According to a news release Saturday afternoon, the production’s finale is set for Sept. 5. Cirque officials called a companywide meeting just before issuing the formal announcement after news of the show’s closing became public.
“Mad Apple introduced stand-up comedy to a Cirque du Soleil resident show for the first time, and its blend of acrobatics and humor was the right combination to lead us out of the pandemic,” Cirque CEO Mark Cornell, appointed this past November, said in a statement. “We thank the cast, crew, and creative team and every guest who joined us at New York-New York, and we remain focused on the next chapter of our Las Vegas portfolio.”
The cast and crew are to receive pay through Oct. 17. Benefits will continue through Oct. 31.
With a cast and crew of 60 employees, “Mad Apple” opened for previews May 12, 2022. The show played to more than 1.2 million ticket-holders.
The future of the venue, which MGM Resorts owns, is not yet clear. Elsewhere, Cirque’s Strip stalwarts “O,” “Mystere,” and “Michael Jackson One” are doing solid business. “Ka” at MGM Grand, routinely the source of shutdown rumors, has reportedly stabilized.
The company’s statement promised it is “also actively developing the next generation of Cirque du Soleil shows for the Strip, with further announcements to follow.”
