Four great pedals – but what do we really want to know?
Welcome to the show! We’ve had a lot of artist shows just lately… and we love them. But it is called That Pedal Show after all, and there are many here among us who feel that life is but a… oh hang on… there are many here among us who miss a good old dig through some new stompers.
We have decided to focus our digging on one or two simple - hopefully obvious - questions that the official demo and review videos probably won’t ask. Now then, regular viewers will know that ‘focus’ isn’t exactly a key strength of That Pedal Show, so we’re easing ourselves in gently via the usual tangents and banter. What we eventually get around to asking is:
- Does the new Ross Distortion sound like an original old one from the late 1970s?
- Does the Thorpy The Dane MkII’s new boost actually sound like the Heavy Water?
- Does the Electro-Harmonix Nano Deluxe Memory Man sound anything like Dan’s original?
- And what is a Lo-Fi reverb anyway? Erm, using the Caroline Météore and UA Golden as our yardsticks.

The ’verbs just keep getting better and better - so what’s new?
Welcome to the show. Today we’re looking at a handful of highly capable reverb units that go far, far beyond the sounds and textures of a simple spring.
Indeed it wasn’t that long ago when it would be pretty unusual to see a reverb pedal at a guitar player’s feet. Today they’re relatively commonplace, but if you need a bit of guidance and inspiration on how to get in the verb game, this show is for you!
Yes, we spend a disproportionate amount of time on the Poly Verbs. More on the Mercury X would have been good. Maybe when Dan has had chance to explore it more we could follow up.

But there’s also the FFM3 Mini version that takes up waaaaay less pedalboard space AND can run off a 9V external supply. Theyre more or less the same price to buy. So what do we think?

He wants headroom and transients – which amp will Dan choose to pair with his Matchless?
Welcome to the show! This one came about because Dan is moving from a fully wet-dry-wet rig, back to a more ‘simple’ wet-dry situation. Albeit ‘TPS Wet-Dry’ we should say… but don’t get hung up on the definitions. It’s a two-amp rig where the fuzz, drive and distortion goes to both amps, and most of the ‘wet’ effects – reverb, delay, tremolo and so on – only go to one of the amps.
Dan’s Matchless C-30 / ESD212 cab has been his #1 amp choice for years now, but what to pair with it? Three contenders are lining up today; they have a closely shared genesis and evolution, so the comparison should be jolly interesting!
Argh! Bassman or Bass Breaker? Im confused…
The amp were using today is a Fender Custom Shop Bass Breaker from 2002. It has nothing to do with the current Bassbreaker series. Ours is a Fender ’59 Bassman amp, exactly as the reissues of the period, albeit in a 2x12 cabinet instead of a 4x10 configuration. We refer to it as a Bassman because thats what it is! Except its called a Bass Breaker… argh!

Powerful processing meets super-simple interface – but how does it sound?
Welcome to the show and welcome to Effector Du Jour. Short videos, and as to-the-point as That Pedal Show is ever likely to get.
There are LOADS of tape delay simulating pedals out there. Some do it in the analogue world, but far more common is to employ some digital signal processing where names such as the Strymon El Capistan, Catalinbread Belle Epoch and Boss RE-202 loom large.
This is hardly UAFX’s first dive into these waters, but there’s something we just love about the Orions simple form factor and relative lack of bells and whistles.
We have a Fulltone Tube Tape Echo for reference – now I KNOW its not exactly the ‘right’ thing as the Orion is aiming more at a kind of Echoplex EP-3 sound. Nevertheless, it’s some context of actual real tape in the far more common world of digital simulations. Erm, and tubes and analogue preamps.
