More tests with video hardware. Video 1 is an older recording that I did with my standard VCR. It's just the normal type that most people have/had. The video was sent to the capture card by composite video which basically shoves all of the data into a single signal.
Clips 2 and 3 use an S-VHS VCR which process the Y signal (blacks and synchronization) and the C signal (colors) separately.
You'll notice in clip 1 that there is quite a lot of chroma grain. This is significantly reduced in the other two because of the internal DNR in the S-VHS player. Clip 1 also has a fair amount of tearing, where the top of the screen curves over to the right. The internal line TBC eliminates this. There are also time sync issues with clip 1 which causes some interlacing artifacts around the middle of the video, despite the original content being progressive. Again, the internal line TBC eliminates this.
Clip 2 is an improvement over clip 1, but still looks raw. The colors are somewhat similar to the old analog Thomas masters from Series 1-3. There are a couple of frames that slightly jump vertically near the middle of the video (1:22-1:23) which is corrected by the external full frame TBC in clip 3.
The proc amp in clip 3 is used to widen the contrast and color saturation in order to give the transfer a more digital look, as well as adding some light sharpening. As a result, the video in general looks a bit more vivid, but brightness and color issues still exist which will be corrected with software.
Once the DV AVI footage is corrected, it will be encoded as a dual-pass MPEG-2 render in Sony Vegas as both original PAL and an NTSC conversion.
