In March, Jessie Gonzalez became the second child in the country, and the first in Texas, to receive this higher dose of Spinraza, a medication that treats spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA.

SMA is a rare genetic disease that causes progressive muscle weakness and can affect a child's ability to move, swallow and breathe.
