Since 1972, the United States and Russia have been bound by arms control agreements limiting the size of their nuclear arsenals. Unless presidents Trump and Putin act now to sign a 5-year extension of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty or New START, 2021 will mark a new era of nuclear dangers. There will be no data exchanges or inspections of either nuclear arsenal—potentially opening the door to an arms race unparalleled since the height of the Cold War.
