Here are my 3 insights from William Powers’ book ‘New Slow City’, which is about his one-year slow living experiment in New York City.

1. Living at the third story

This a practice whereby you shift your focus away from ads and shops by tilting your head and looking up. There are birds flying, leaves waving in the air. As Powers writes: “Out of the buy-o-sphere and into the biosphere.”

2. Slowing down is eye-opening

During his experiment, he started to see all the slow things happening around him. Things that he missed before. Musicians jamming in the park, really paying attention to the food when having dinner.

3. Smart filtering

What you do is simply squint your eyes a little when you see a billboard or ad in the city. This transforms it into a pleasant blur of shape and color.

Hope these insights will help you when trying to live more slowly in a city!
