European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen just announced the latest sanctions package against Russia due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The new sanctions target key sectors—energy, finance, trade, and crypto—while banning entry to former Russian combatants. They aim to sustain economic pressure while the global energy market is shifting.
Energy measures include sanctioning 30 more shadow fleet vessels, and restricting LNG tanker sales, among others. Sanctions on Russian and third-country banks will expand. Trade restrictions broaden export controls on military-critical metals, drone components, and imports (e.g., cod, car parts). New import bans on Russian fisheries mark a previously unsanctioned sector. Alongside sanctions, the EU reaffirms €6 billion in June aid for Ukraine and advances its EU accession process.
