This month highlights the world premiere recording of Joachim Raff’s comic opera Dame Kobold—a witty and lyrical work that contrasts Wagnerian solemnity with Rossini’s sparkle. A protégé of Liszt and Schumann, Raff reveals his flair for melody and theatrical pacing in this charming score, performed by Matthias Lika, Lara Rieken, Julia Surushkina, Gustav Wenzel Most, and Lukas Krimmel with the Choir of the Theatre of the City of Ústí nad Labem and the West Bohemian Symphony Orchestra under Dario Salvi. Another highlighted release features Giancarlo Guerrero and the Nashville Symphony in GRAMMY-nominated composer Kip Winger’s Symphony of the Returning Light and Violin Concerto “In the Language of Flowers”, with Peter Otto as soloist.
On our affiliated labels, Capriccio offers a rare revival of Paul Büttner’s compelling Symphonies Nos. 3 & 4 (C5554), performed by the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin under Christopher Ward. Born in Dresden in 1870, Büttner was once hailed by Arthur Nikisch as a symphonist worthy of Brahms and Bruckner, his richly Romantic scores combining grandeur with luminous orchestration. Although silenced in 1933 when his works were branded ‘degenerate’, these rediscovered symphonies now reveal a master craftsman whose voice deserves renewed recognition. Meanwhile, Opus Arte’s Scènes de ballet – A Month in the Country – Rhapsody (OA1396D / OABD7331D) celebrates the artistry of legendary choreographer Frederick Ashton and the Royal Ballet. Set to music by Stravinsky, Chopin and Rachmaninov, these three ballets—elegantly conducted by Emmanuel Plasson with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House—encapsulate Ashton’s signature blend of poetic grace, expressive storytelling, and timeless virtuosity.
