The world of XR continues its rapid evolution this week.
At the forefront of the Quest updates is a new look at the future of its operating system, officially being referred to as Horizon OS, hinting at deeper integration and future capabilities. On the user experience front, two much-requested accessibility and comfort features are rolling out: a native Screen Reader and the ability to finally disable adaptive lighting. However, it's not all perfect, as one particularly stubborn bug continues to stick around, reminding us that progress often comes with a few bumps.
For developers and creators, Meta has released the Quest XR Runtime Optimizer, a powerful new tool for Unity designed to help pinpoint and fix performance bottlenecks, leading to smoother experiences for everyone. In the professional space, Adobe is bringing its Substance 3D Modeler to Quest, allowing artists to review complex 3D models directly in-headset. And for the passionate modding community, the announcement of Flat2VR Spark promises to make it easier than ever to bring classic flat-screen games into the world of VR.
Looking beyond Meta, the competition is making waves. Reports suggest Vivo's anticipated Apple Vision Pro competitor may not launch this year after all. Meanwhile, Pico continues to enhance its ecosystem, teasing "Ultra-Enhanced" body tracking for the Pico 4. And in a huge win for the PC VR community, an open-source driver now enables the PSVR2's advanced eye-tracking to work on PC, unlocking new potential for the headset outside of the PlayStation ecosystem.
