That's it! A compact and (relatively) easy to build multi-item sorter with no slot allocation and overflow protection that can be expanded to any size and is capable of storing up to 50 different items per row and the rows now are only 1-wide thanks to the system shown to me by Elmer Lingestal

Now the system only requires 4 non-stackable items for the entire system and chests can easily mix items that stack both to 16 or 64 items. No unstackables thought!
