Sega first launched its iconic 16-bit console as the Mega Drive in Japan in 1988, followed by its release in North America in 1989 under the name Genesis. By 1990, the system had expanded globally: Virgin Mastertronic handled distribution in Europe, Ozisoft brought it to Australasia, and Tec Toy introduced it to the Brazilian market—all retaining the Mega Drive branding. In South Korea, Samsung marketed the console as the Super Gam*Boy, later rebranding it as the Super Aladdin Boy.
