In British Columbia, new drivers have several restrictions to follow, including:
No alcohol or drugs
You must have zero alcohol or drugs in your system while driving. If you are caught driving with alcohol, you will face immediate penalties, including a driving suspension.
Display an N sign
You must display an "N" sign on the back of your vehicle to indicate that you are a new driver.
Limit one passenger
You can only carry one passenger, unless accompanied by a supervisor or by passengers who are immediate family members.
No electronic devices
You cannot use any electronic device while driving, including cell phones, GPS systems, or music players, unless they are hands-free and voice-activated. The only exception is in case of an emergency to call 911.
Learner's hours
Learners are not permitted to drive between midnight and 5 a.m.
If you break any of these rules, you may face penalties such as: Losing three demerit points and a $167 fine, Up to six months suspension, and 18 months prohibition on driving.
