In the 70’s we discovered new forms of life living next to hydrothermal vents produced by underwater volcanoes. It was our first observation of life that didn’t use light to produce energy. But now scientists have confirmed that life doesn’t just live in and around these vents, they also live UNDER the surface.
By using a remote operated vehicle to flip over pieces of the seafloor, scientists discovered a thriving community of bacteria, protists, snails and tubeworms.
