Herbal Medicine may be called both ancient and contemporary, an art and a science. As a science, herbalism embraces pharmacology, physiology, and pathology, but herbalism is also an art based on personal and community experience, including historical or traditional knowledge. As an experience-based art, no two herbalists will ever practice exactly the same way.

This new course introduces the basic principles of herbal medicine, instructed by one of the United States' most renowned herbalists and author of eight books on herbalism, Matthew Wood. Students will explore how to build up and use a home herbal apothecary that is suitable for use with family and friends, and appropriate for the treatment of simple problems like first aid, acute disease, and some chronic conditions.
