In this lecture, Neil Carmichael will examine the history of Tory attitudes to imperialism, internationalism and free trade, followed by key turning points in domestic Party politics, to explain how the Party leadership, structure and membership moved towards an increasingly populist, nationalist and Euro-sceptic set of positions. This lecture will look at the contemporary political situation and the challenges for the Conservatives as the realities of Brexit begin to impact on policymaking.

Biography
Neil Carmichael, Honorary Professor, University of Nottingham, and UCL (IoE), is Chief Executive of UCEC (Education China), Chair of the Association of Dental Groups; and a member of SPEAC, Royal Society. Neil is a Trustee, Sir Heinz Koeppler Trust – Wilton Park, and a member of the Advisory Board of the D Group, strategic international network. He is a Trustee of the Sir Edward Heath Charitable Foundation. Neil was Member of Parliament for Stroud (2010-17), serving on the Education Select Committee throughout period and latterly as Chair. He established the All-Parliamentary Party Group on School Leadership and Governance and took the Antarctic Act 2013 through Parliament.

His stories have won several international awards, and been translated into many languages.
