NEW COKE! We compared NEW COKE (1985) with COKE CLASSIC in a taste test! In the 1980's Coca-Cola lost their minds when they changed the recipe (to New Coke or Coke II) of their soda (Coke Classic). Stranger Things, has partnered up with Coca-Cola to bring back the New Coke formula from 1985. It was a huge flop in the 80’s, but now they’ve decided to bring it back for a limited run to promote Stranger Things. We got some and just had to taste it and see what each other thought!
Final results were I thought New Coke tasted like RC Cola, not Pepsi like many people say.
Is New Coke sweeter than Coke Classic: We both said no, but if so it was very slight
Does New Coke have an aftertaste compared to Coke Classic: Both said No
Does New Coke have a more syrup taste than Coke Classic: I said slightly, Mrs. Berz said No
Is New Coke more carbonated than Coke Classic: We both said No
Is New Coke easier to drink fast: Both said yes, it is slightly flatter tasting
HISTORY:
New Coke was the unofficial name for the reformulation of Coca-Cola introduced in April 1985 by the Coca-Cola Company. In 1992, it was renamed Coke II.
By 1985, Coca-Cola had been losing market share to diet soft drinks and non-cola beverages for many years. Blind taste tests indicated that consumers seemed to prefer the sweeter taste of rival Pepsi-Cola, and so the Coca-Cola recipe was reformulated. However, the American public's reaction to the change was negative, and "New Coke" was considered a major failure. The company reintroduced Coke's original formula within three months, rebranded "Coca-Cola Classic", resulting in a significant sales boost. This led to speculation New Coke formula had been a marketing ploy to stimulate sales of original Coca-Cola, which the company has denied.
Coke II was discontinued in July 2002. It remains influential as a cautionary tale against tampering with a well-established and successful brand. In May 2019, it was announced that the 1985 formulation (bearing the name "New Coke") would be reintroduced to promote the third season of the Netflix series Stranger Things which takes place in 1985.
The Pepsi challenge originally took the form of a single blind taste test. At malls, shopping centers, and other public locations, a Pepsi representative sets up a table with two white cups: one containing Pepsi and one with Coca-Cola. Shoppers are encouraged to taste both colas, and then select which drink they prefer. Then the representative reveals the two bottles so the taster can see whether they preferred Coke or Pepsi. The results of the test leaned toward a consensus that Pepsi was preferred by more Americans
