I sawed out a large branch, a quarter of the tree, on this open centre semi dwarf bush Egremont Russet apple tree last year. I can't remember why, I suspect it may have been severe canker but it might have bee severe overcrowding. I left a long stump to allow new shoots to grow out to fill the space back. A sort of renewal pruning.
Anyway, half a dozen new shoots are coming up. The tree will do this naturally in response to light. I remove all but the 2 most ideally located shoots. They will now grow faster without the competition. The tree will be re-balanced in 2 or 3 years.
