Navy News, Cuba, August 3, 2020: Majestic sight as the second America-class amphibious assault ship (acquired by the USN 28 February 2020), USS Tripoli (LHA 7), arrives at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay (en route to her home port in San Diego).
This very impressive class of next gen warship provides the United States Navy with an ability to rapidly transport and deploy large numbers of marines, assorted landing craft, including air-cushion vehicles (from a well deck on LHA 8 and beyond), plus a multitude of aircraft types such as AV-8B Harriers, F-35Bs, MV-22B Ospreys, CH-53E Super Stallions, CH-53K King Stallions, UH-1Y Venoms, AH-1Z Vipers and more—it's essentially an amphibious assault ship and an aircraft carrier (similar in size to the Midway-class of carrier).
