Ford revealed the pickup truck as the most powerful Raptor ever for high-performance off-roading, designed to make the hairs on your neck stand up.
Blue Oval fans can rejoice with the official launch of the Ford F-150 Raptor R high-performance truck. Regular F-150 Raptor owners and shoppers felt short-changed when the 2021 RAM TRX super truck hit the scene, but Ford’s new potent pickup seeks to even the playing field. With power borrowed from the Mustang Shelby GT500, enthusiasts will have to wait until the Raptor R rolls out of the factory for the inevitable drag strip matchup.
At the heart of the F-150 Raptor R is a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 originally used in the GT500, with 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque. Ford engineers retuned the power plant to be better suited for truck use, so the Raptor R’s output is set for 700 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque.
This is the first time a V8 has graced the engine bay of an F-150 Raptor since the first generation (2010-2014) version.
Curiously, Ford chose not to tweak the Raptor R’s performance to top the specs coming from the Ram TRX — 702 ponies and 650 lb-ft of torque. But, Ford’s newest super truck will weigh about 500 lbs less than the Ram, so bragging rights may come from 0-60 times, not benchmark output numbers.
“R” Makes A Difference
Not wanting to make current F-150 Raptor owners feel completely left out, Ford’s visual distinctions for the Raptor R are subtle. A pronounced air intake in the hood is the most noticeable clue. Badging gets accented with an orange-tinted “R” with the Raptor name to further distinguish the top-dog truck.
Priced at $109,415, the F-150 Raptor R will roll out of the company’s Dearborn, Michigan, factory at the end of the year.
