To my surprise, Sony actually did introduce three new standard definition camcorders for 2012, but they are not being sold in the USA. There is the budget-model DCR-SX21, the 80 GB hard drive camcorder DCR-SR21, and most unique of all, the DCR-PJ5 with built-in projector and video input!
However, so far I've only been able to find the DCR-SX21 in NTSC form, on the Canadian Best Buy web site. The other two are probably PAL-only, which is a shame because I'd like to have a Handycam with a built-in projector without spending $500+ on an HD model!
