We all need a good influence in our lives. But we all need to be a good influence as well. David had spent a lot of time in the house of Saul, as a court musician, as the husband of Michal, and friend of Jonathan. It would have been easy to be influenced by a sovereign whose office needed to be respected but had to be turned away from submission and obedience to the one true God. That must have created a dark and sinister atmosphere for David as he anticipated his role as the next king of Isreal.
